How can we contribute to the compassion of the human spirit?
Through literature, theatre, and education.

Out of the Apple Orchard
by Yvonne David

Adapted to the stage
by Ellen W. Kaplan

Inspired by Joseph Stein’s Fiddler on the Roof, based on Sholom Aleichem’s Tevye the Dairyman, and
A Christmas Carol. by Charles Dickens. Out of the Apple Orchard contains similar universal themes: making
mistakes, rectifying errors, asking for forgiveness, and creating a new beginning.

We see an immigrant Jewish family who has escaped Lithuania arrive in New York City for a better life. Adam Bieman’s Bubbe, his grandmother, shares with him the injustices of discrimination through antisemitism. In the fall of 1910, the family moves from the Lower East Side to the hamlet of Mountaindale in the Catskills for fresh country air. Papa is too sick to work and food is scarce. Twelve-year-old Adam Bieman is hungry and sees the apples in the orchard on his way to school. He cannot resist the ripe, red fruit. Soon his troubles begin.

The young boy wrestles with a need to feed his family, but his mischievous choices tear at his conscience. By making up for his wrongdoings and asking for forgiveness, Adam discovers a kind, compassionate humanity.

Kindness to children, love for children, goodness to children...
these are the only investments that never fail.”
- Henry David Thoreau

The Mountains proved a training ground for such luminaries.
